12 Hollywood Women Who Prove Curvy is Chic

Over the years, society’s definition of the perfect body standards has changed. It has gone from being a size zero or skinny, to being curvy and comfortable with who you are. Despite this acceptance, it is never easy to escape the judgements, leading to women being increasingly pressured to conform to the normal ‘skinny is beautiful’ standard. Even with fame, it is inevitable to escape this judgement, yet these Hollywood women prove that being in the limelight does not require you to be thin or unhealthy.

  • Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham, an American model began her career in 2000 when she was identified in a mall for her looks. A year later, she was signed by a modelling company and given a chance to star in a film, Boys Klub. Although this film career did not take off, she went on to appear on America’s Next Top Model after her success in the modelling field. Graham is one of the few plus-sized models to make it to the mainstream modelling stage, that of supermodelling. Like her colleagues, she gets to wear designer clothes and walk the ramp just like every size 0 model. She has time and time again proved that women do not need to be skinny in order to make it to the modelling scene. She deserves the recognition as she constantly keeps herself toned and fit. Additionally, she is very body-positive and preaches loving one’s body for what it is. She proudly flaunts her body and does not shy away from showing off her stretch marks. Recently, she even launched a lingerie and swimwear line with Nordstrom, an American luxury department store and Addition Elle, a Canadian plus-size clothing company.

Demi Lovato rose to fame as a child star who acted in Disney movies, primarily as a singer. Eventually, her career took off and she began singing full time. Like almost every other child star that was exposed to stardom too soon, she fell trap to drugs which resulted in her fluctuating weight. Since then, she has been in and out of rehab, but publicly struggled with her body image after being fat-shamed. While it took a toll on her mental health, gradually she started opening up and began advocating how body images should be perceived, especially so young girls shouldn’t have to struggle so early on. She has gone on to be the face of many magazine covers, speaking about how she really feels about her body and weight issues. She continues to post pictures of herself showing off her curvy features, preaching to love her curves, just like everybody should love theirs.

Christina Hendricks, an American actress has been criticised for her weight over the years, being called “full-figured”, which she admits she finds rude. A New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn said, “You don’t put a big girl in a big dress,” for which Horyn faced backlash from Hendricks, her fans, and her husband. Hendricks has admitted that she would be happier if she dropped a few pounds, but that is a normal thing every woman wishes for. Despite the criticism, she never misses a chance to shy away from the camera or strut in whatever she wishes to wear. After gaining admiration for her role as Joan on Mad Men, she has since gone on to star in movies and model as well. In 2010, she was voted as the sexiest woman in the world but a poll taken by readers of Esquire magazine.

Jennifer Kate Hudson, former American Idol contestant consequently went on to star in Dreamgirls, and won an Academy Award for her performance. This took her singing and acting career to the next level and she has not stopped since. Early on in her career, her managers said she was too big and needed to lose weight. In her 20s she went on a diet for the same and managed to lose some, but still remained open and positive towards having a curvaceous figure. Over the course of six years, she lost 40 kilos and has gone on to say that she’s prouder of the weight loss and her current figure than she is of her Oscar. She admits that her size was always considered normal where she grew up, and now she stays true to maintaining a healthy body.

America Ferrera began her acting career in her early days, but she gained recognition when she became Ugly Betty – a character that has stood out in pop culture for even a decade after its conclusion. Currently, she co-produces and stars in Superstore. Ferrera has always maintained her size 6-8 figure, and is genuinely comfortable with who she is. She believes she has the body of a ‘regular person’, yet sometimes worries about losing weight.

Beyoncé needs no introduction. From singing to acting to modelling, this powerhouse has done it all. She has disclosed that she does not have a naturally thin body, and that is completely okay with her since everybody is not supposed to be the same. Over everything, she advocated being healthy and taking care of oneself. She is known for putting her curves out there, whether it comes to posing for pictures or dancing in her music videos. At the age of 18, after receiving comments about her weight, she went on to write a song titled Bootylicious to celebrate women’s bodies and their curves.

The American singer is undoubtedly one of the best when it comes to mega love hits, but she’s no stranger to the Hollywood scene either, with cameos in several movies. Carey too has faced lots of comments and criticism for her weight and unfortunately, she succumbed. She used to airbrush and alter her pictures to make her appear thinner. However, her fans encouraged her to be comfortable in her own body following which she turned to maintaining a toned figure as opposed to editing pictures. Confidence is key in pulling off a great outfit, and Dennings has a lot of it. She has not outwardly spoken about her weight yet her attitude suggests that she does not care about it either.

The singer-songwriter primarily focuses on her musical career, but she has dabbled with the Hollywood cinema scene from time to time. Regardless of which field she stood in, she was always shamed for her weight. She admitted that she never had a slim-waisted figure and was never interested in having one. After having her first child, she gained weight again and was attacked by the media for being too fat. She did not let this get to her and has stayed true to living life to the fullest rather than using time to stay hungry and lose weight.
